Information for Agnostics

This page is to provide information to members or newcomers who just cannot be comfortable with the idea of God. These may include people who are strong non-believers in God (atheist), those that are not sure whether they believe in God or not (agnostic) and those who consider themselves humanists or free thinkers.

For people who accept the higher power concept or who pretend to accept it, recovery in AA can be an easier journey but for many who just do not accept God as a belief it can be more difficult.

AA considers itself inclusive of all people who wish to recover from the disease of Alcoholism. In practice, like all organisations made up of human beings, this does not always happen as it should. Members who have made miraculous recoveries with the help of their higher power sometimes do not understand that others do not share their certainties.

The information on this page is designed to help members and should be taken as an expression of AA inclusiveness. If you are reading this please be reassured that an alcoholic in AA can stay sober as an Atheist, Agnostic or Free Thinker. There have been many over the years.
